Becauseofthe2007–08WritersGuildofAmericastrike,therewereonly12episodesproducedinthisseasoninsteadoftheusual20(with4consecutiveepisodesmadebetweenFebruary23andMarch15),makingthistheshortestseasonintheseriesrunandbeatingoutboththesixth(1980–1981)seasonandthethirteenth(1987–1988)season,whichhadthirteenepisodes.ThisisalsotheonlyseasoninSNLhistorynottohaveanewChristmasepisode,sincetheWGAstrikespannedfromNovember2007toFebruary2008. Nochangestothecasthappenedoverthesummerandeveryonefromlastseasonreturned.Duringthestrike,long-timecastmemberMayaRudolphlefttheshow,asshehadnocontractwithSNLthatyear.CaseyWilson,anactressandwriterwhofrequentlyperformsattheUprightCitizensBrigadeTheater,washiredinJanuary2008tofillthevoid,butduetothestrike,didnotappearontheshowuntiltheyreturnedonFebruary23,2008. OnNovember5,2007,aftertheepisodehostedbyBrianWilliams,theWritersGuildofAmericawentonstrike.ItwasannouncedthatSNLwouldairitsnextepisodeonNovember10,2007(withhostTheRockandmusicalguestAmyWinehouse),liveonair,withafutureepisodetofollow,featuringJonahHillandmusicalguestKidRock.However,onNovember7,2007,SNL'sofficialwebsiteconfirmedthatthoseepisodeswerecanceledandrerunswouldbeseenbeginningNovember10,andwouldcontinueduringthedurationofthestrike.TheRock/Winehouseshowwascanceled,alongwiththeJonahHill/KidRockepisode(thoughJonahHillwouldgetasecondopportunity,whenhehostedtheMarch15episode,withmusicalguestMariahCarey[fillinginforaflu-strickenJanetJackson]andTheRockwouldhostnextseason,withmusicalguestRayLaMontagne.AmyWinehousewouldnevergetthechancetobeamusicalguest,host,orevencameoduetoherdeathin2011).
