WiththeTARDISstuckatthebottomofacliff,thefourtimetravellershaveinstalledthemselvesinanunoccupiedRomanvilla.Theowner,FlaviusGiscardisawaycampaigninginGaul.AstheDoctorandIanrecline,BarbaraandVickiwalktothenearbyRomanvillage.Atthemarkettheyarespottedbytwoslavetraders,DidiusandSevcheria.WhentheyreturntothevillatheDoctorannouncesthatheisofftoRome,somemilesaway,andwilltraveltherewithVicki.LaterthateveningBarbaraandIan,nowalone,arerelaxingwhenthetwoslaversburstinuponthem.Theyaresoonoverpoweredandtakenprisoner.Ianissoldtooneslaveowner,whileBarbaraistobetradedwithanotherandsenttoRome.　　TheDoctorandVickiareenrouteforRomewhentheyfindthemurderedbodyofalyreplayernamedMaximusPettulian.TheDoctorisholdingtheman’slyrewhenaCenturionarrivesandmistakeshimforthedeadmanwhoislateforanengagementinRome.TheCenturionthusaccompaniesthemtoAssysium.Oncestationedataninnthere,theCenturionmakescontactwiththemuteassassinAscaris,whokilledtherealPettulian,andinstructshimtokilltheDoctor.TheassassindrawshisswordandheadsofftotheDoctor’schambers.　　TheDoctoroverpowerstheassassinand,alongwithVicki,driveshimawaythroughanopenwindow.ItseemstheCenturionhasfled,andtheDoctorconcludesthesoldierwasinleaguewiththeassassin.HedecidestomaintainhisaliasasPettulianandheadonwardtothecityofRome.Barbaraismeanwhilealreadyinthecityandissoonsoldinopenauctionfor10,000sestercestoamannamedTavius,whoishighlyplacedinthecourtoftheEmperorNero.SheistobeahandmaidentoNero'ssecondwife,theEmpressPoppaeaSabina.Taviusisakindlymanbutwarnsthatifshetriestoescapeherslaverythatshewillbekilled.　　TheDoctorandVickiarriveatNero’scourttooandencounterTavius,whoseemstoimplytotheDoctorthatPettulianispartofasecretnetworkinwhichheisalsoaplayer.FurtherdiscussionisinterruptedbythearrivalofNerohimself,alaughableexcuseforaleaderwhoseemsarrogant,vainandselfish.TheDoctorcleverlyavoidsanextendedlyreconcert,andthenhasthefreedomofthecourt.OnonewalkaroundtheyfindthebodyoftheCenturionwhoimperilledthemearlier.　　IanhasbeenconfinedtoagalleyintheMediterraneanbutthecraftsoonrunsintoroughseasandisbrokenup.Heiswasheduponthenearbyshoreandthereisfoundbyanothersurvivorofthegalley,Delos,whohassavedhislifeandremovesthelastofhischains.TheyagreetoheadforRomeinsearchofBarbara.Whentheyreachthere,however,theyarecapturedbysomecenturions.Takentothearenatheyaresettobetrainedasgladiators–andtheirfirstopponentswillbethelions.　　ItbecomesapparenttotheDoctorthatTaviushadtheCenturionmurderedandthathetooisexpectedtoundertakesomesortofaction.NerodecidestheDoctormustfulfilanobligationtoo,andorganizesabanquetinhishonouratwhichhemustplaythelyre.HealsotakesashinetoBarbaraandstartstopursueherromantically–andliterally–muchtotheangerofPoppaea,whodecidestohaveherpoisonedatthePettulianbanquet.BarbarahasjustleftthebanquetchamberwhentheDoctorarrivesthere,warningNerothathehaslearnthiswinecouldbepoisoned.Ithasbeen,aspartofPoppaea’splan.　　TheDoctorissoonputtoperformcentrestageandpicksuphislyrewiththewarningthatonlythosewiththemostsensitiveandperceptivehearingwillbeabletodiscernitssubtlemelody.Hethencreatesabsolutelynosoundbuthascreatedaclimateinwhichno-onewishestomakethemselvesouttobephilistinesbynotappreciatingthemusic.Neroisnotconvinced,however,andinprivatefumesagainstthedeception.HedecidestohavePettulianfedtothelions.　　Meanwhile,atthearenaitselfIanandDeloshavebeentrainedasgladiatorsandaresettofighteachother.WithNerowatchingthemtheyaretoldtobattletothedeath.　　However,DelosandIandecidetofighttheirwayoutofthearena,andIanisabletoshouttothewatchingBarbarathathewillbebacktorescueherbeforeheandDelosflee.TheEmperorcallsoffhissoldierswhenitbecomescleartheycannotbecaught,planningtohavehimkilledwhenhereturnstorescueBarbara.Acrowdofsoldiersarearrangedatthepalace.　　TheDoctorhasmeanwhilefoundthearchitecturalplansforNero’snewRome,anddeducesthatsincetheyearis64ADthattheEmperorisplanningtodestroythecity.TaviusarrivesandwarnstheDoctorthattheEmperorisplanningtokillhimtoo,advisinghimtocompletehismissionandkillNerosoon.ItseemsthatPettulianwasanassassinallalong.TheDoctorandVickidecidetoleavequicklybutbeforedepartingaccidentallysetfiretoNero’sarchitecturalplans.TheEmperornoticesthisanddecidestoburndownthecity,thankingtheDoctoranddecidingafteralltosparehislife.ArabblearebribedintostartingtheblazeandwhileanarchyragesIanishelpedintothepalacebyTavius,whoreuniteshimwithBarbara.UnderTavius’eyethetwoareallowedtoescapeandmaketheirwayfromRomeandbacktothevilla;TaviusisrevealedintheendtobeanearlyChristian.Deloshelpsthemgetclearofthepalace,partingfromhisfriendIan.TheDoctorandVickialsoescapethecity,watchingitburnfromanearbyhill.　　BythetimetheDoctorandVickireturntothevilla,IanandBarbarahavesprucedthemselvesup,andtheDoctormistakenlyassumesthattheyhavenotevenleftthevilla.AllfourleaveintheTARDISbuthavebarelybeguntotravelwhenastrangeforcestartsdraggingtheshiptoanunknownlocation.　　维基：http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Romans_(Doctor_Who) 更多关于《神秘博士：罗马假日》的精彩内容请持续关注小红帽影院。
