InanextraordinarilypoliticalseasontheWorldChampionshipwenttoMcLarendriverJamesHuntbyonepointfromFerrari'sdefendingchampionNikiLauda,althoughFerraritooktheInternationalCupforF1Manufacturers.HunthadmovedfromtheHeskethteamtoMcLaren,takingtheplaceofdualWorldChampionEmersonFittipaldiwhohadmovedtodriveforhisbrotherWilson'sFittipaldiAutomotiveteamfortheseason. ThecontroversybeganinSpainwhereHuntwasinitiallydisqualifiedfromfirstplace,givingtheracetoLauda,onlyforthedecisiontobeoverturnedonappealmonthslater.Thesix-wheeledTyrrellP34confoundedtheskepticsbywinninginSweden,withLaudathirdandHuntfifth. HuntwoninFranceand,itseemed,inBritain,buttheracehadbeenrestartedafterafirstlappile-upandHuntdroveonanaccessroadreturningtothepits,whichwasagainsttherules.HewaseventuallydisqualifiedafteranappealfromFerrari.Laudabecametheofficialracewinner. LaudathencrashedheavilyinWestGermanyandappearedlikelytodiefromhisinjuries.HuntwontheraceandfinishedfourthtoJohnWatson'sPenske(theteam'sonlywin)inAustria.Miraculously,LaudareturnedtofinishfourthinItaly,whereHunt,JochenMassandWatsonwererelegatedtothebackofthegridforinfringementsoftheregulations. HuntwoninCanadaandintheUSbutLaudatookthirdtoleadHuntbythreepointsgoingintothefinalraceinJapan.InappallingweatherconditionsMarioAndrettiwon,Laudawithdrewbecauseofthehazardousconditions,andHunteventuallyfinishedthirdtotakethetitle. ChrisAmon,drovehislastGrandPrixinGermany,failingtowinasinglechampionshiprace.The1976Wolf-WilliamscarswereoriginallyHeskeths,andWilliamshadlefttheteambySeptember.AfterthedepartureofMatraattheendof1972noFrenchconstructorcompetedinFormulaOneforthreeseasonsuntiltheLigier'sarrivalatthestartofthisseason.AmericanconstructorShadowreceivedaBritishlicence,thusbecomingthefirstconstructortoofficiallychangeitsnationality.
